It looks like he has a shirt on next to the U, no? No pants though.
I would consider this as a place for balance as well. Having only 4 slots for clothes which the player can't control, plus having them request specific items, plus having certain items always count for more esteem, makes it difficult for the player to predictably manage their esteem thru items.

Looks like they need a shirt - pants are most important, then shirts, then the rest. Missing a shirt or pants will knock the bar down.
