Crafting with value adds quantity not value
When crafting items with added value the item is not removed from the queue and the crafter continues to make them infinitely. This is even when quantity is 1. I ended up using all the copper on axes :(. I have lots of axes now though! This happens at the forge and crafting table.

The value field specifies the minimum value item that will satisfy the task. So if you set it to 10, they'll craft until they make X with value of 10.
